Today we woke up
to a different kind of day than we were hoping for

Because when I looked forward all I could see was black
But I could hear you screaming as your skin cracked
Maybe there was some advantage to going blind

Then you said “What’s the point in harbouring hope
When there’s freedom at the end of a rope?”
At first I couldn’t answer
Then you were gone by the time I spoke
I wish I didn’t have to keep those words inside
But in my mind we were side by side
On the day everything died.
